There are several incredible historical sites to visit throughout South Haven, but none are arguably more popular or iconic than our legendary South Haven Lighthouse! Built over a century ago the South Haven Lighthouse still stands proudly as an iconic symbol of our history, and a site you need to visit the next time you’re in South Haven.
Our Local Guardian and Protector
For over 100 years the South Haven Lighthouse in MI has served as a guardian and protector of sorts for our town. Stationed right at the entrance of the Black River the South Haven Lighthouse helped to keep sailors safe while exploring the waters of Lake Michigan since it was first lit all the way back in 1872, and is still operational to this very day!
Newly Restored and Looking as Good as Ever!
The South Haven Lighthouse has definitely seen some changes and had some work done over the years, but none has been bigger or more important than its most recent restoration! The Historical Association of South Haven was able to raise over $300,000, and in July 2017 the restoration was complete and was rededicated – and let me tell you, she looks better than ever! With a fully restored interior and brand new paint coating, of the outside the South Haven Lighthouse is ready to stand the test of time and continue to watch over our shores for the next hundred years and beyond!
Visit the Site During Harborfest!
To help preserve the lighthouse for generations to come the tower itself is typically closed throughout the year (the pier and site are open though!), but not during Harborfest! During Harborfest every year the tower opens itself up to those who want to explore it with an open house! This year’s Harborfest will take place on June 15th and 16th in downtown South Haven and Riverfront, and will also feature live music, Dragon Boat races, and much more! It is also the one time of year the lighthouse is open, so you’ll want to make sure not to miss it!
Enjoy the Wacky Antics of Mermaid Megafest
Over Memorial Weekend 2018, thousands of people gathered in mermaid costumes to set the Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Mermaids. It might seem like a silly event, but this four-day festival is all about protecting and preserving our planet’s freshwater ecosystems—and that’s a cause we can all get behind! Look for this zany event to return in 2019.
